5 Television characters I wish I was friends with…

I love my television friends. Wait, what? Am I really calling those fictional characters friends? Yes I am, and I’m not even ashamed of it. Think about it: why do we love television series? We like them because we recognize ourselves and our own lives in them, we like them because they’re great entertainment, we like them because they make us laugh and cry, we like them because they’re a way of escapism. But we LOVE them because we feel a strong bond with the characters. The characters become our friends. That’s why we are devastated when one of our favorite TV shows has come to an end: our friends are taken away from us. Luckily, we are able to watch series again and again which gives us the opportunity to fan the fire of our fictional friendships.

Below you can find my list of “TV characters I wish I were friends with” and why this is the case…

‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival: What We Most Want to See

As a longtime Gilmore Girls fan, I reacted to news of the upcoming Netflix revival of the show, in the form of four mini-movies, with a mix of disbelief (Really? After all this time?), relief (Finally Amy Sherman-Palladino can finish the series the way she intended!), and, of course, extreme excitement. Fans have been buzzing about every new casting announcement and analyzing what it might mean for the story.

Personally, I’ll be happy with literally anything. New Gilmore Girls is new Gilmore Girls, and I have all the faith in the world that ASP will come through with something worth watching. That said, of course there are certain things I hope are addressed with the revival, and other things that I just would really love to see.

Rory doesn’t end up with Dean or Logan

I don’t think there’s much chance of this, but it’s still on my list because if Rory did end up with Dean or Logan, it would be horribly depressing. Everyone has their opinions on Rory’s various boyfriends, but to me it doesn’t make sense that she’d find long term happiness with Dean, and I just really don’t like Logan. So yeah, I’m biased. I don’t really think she’ll end up with Jess, either, but if she did…I wouldn’t be mad about it. At all.

What happens when someone uses a cell phone at Luke’s Diner

I just really want to know if Luke is still enforcing the no cell phones rule. I assume he probably is, but HOW? It’s got to be much harder in 2016 than it was in 2006.

Kirk is still exploring new job opportunities

The Stars Hollow townies, and especially Kirk, are the special spices in the Gilmore Girls formula that make it so interesting and endearing. With news of Sean Gunn joining the revival cast, we know Kirk will make an appearance, but I hope that he’s the same ol’ Kirk. I want to see the version of Kirk that’s always got a new odd job and is both bizarre and beautifully clueless. I don’t think it would be right if Kirk was suddenly the picture of maturity and stability.

Luke and Lorelai get some resolution

When Gilmore Girls ended, the Luke/Lorelai situation was left (probably intentionally) very ambiguous. No thank you. Sort that situation out one way or the other, please! Either they get together and stay together or they are definitely, definitively apart for good. But hopefully if that’s the case they are still best frenemies.

Kwan and Steve get some screentime

I generally could not care less about kids, but for some reason I am just itching to know what Lane & Zach’s twins, Kwan and Steve, are up to these days! Are they musically-inclined like their parents? Or do either of them take after Mrs. Kim? Maybe one of each? There are just so many funny little directions this situation could take, and I would love to see it as a small story throughout the revival episodes.

The clothes are fantastic enough to inspire a tumblr

The Gilmore Girls always had slightly eclectic fashion sense, with Lorelai never shying away from a loud pattern or low cut, and Rory preferring mostly simple, classic clothes with an occasional quirk thrown in. I’m excited to see these ladies’ updated looks and I’m hoping for an odd but fashionable blend of items worthy of one of those tumblr pages that tells you where you can, for the low price of $1200, purchase a dress like Lorelai’s.

Richard gets a fitting tribute

I’m confident this will happen – ASP clearly loved Edward Hermann and was deeply affected by his death, so I know she will address it appropriately on the show. I’m just hopeful that they are able to find the right balance in tone so that the loss of Richard is important and given the time it deserves, but doesn’t dominate too much of the storyline.

The last four words are worth the hype

If you’re a fan of Gimore Girls, you’ve no doubt heard the legend of the last four words. For many years, even before the show originally ended, ASP had the idea in her head for what she wanted the last four words of the series to be. When Sherman-Palladino left the show before its final season, those four words became legend. Would we ever hear them? Well, now we’re going to, and now I just hope they can live up to the huge expectation that has been built up around them.
This list could go on forever, because in reality I could get excited about seeing just about anything related to Gilmore Girls. Just seeing all my favorite characters back together again on screen will be amazing regardless, but if the revival checks off the items on my list, even better!

TV Character Breakups that Broke Us

How often do you get invested in a show and the characters you know belong together? And when they finally get together you cheer and bask in the glow of their new love. And then a couple episodes or seasons later something dramatic happens that breaks up your favorite couple, and all you’re left with a sense of emptiness. Here are just a few examples of TV shows with heartbreaking splits.

  1. Elena and Stefan – The Vampire Diaries

After four seasons of love and confusion, Elena and Stefan finally break up after he confronts her about her feelings for his brother, Damon. Elena spent her summer searching for Stefan after he turned off his humanity, and as a result spent a lot of time with Damon and eventually fell for him. This was a disaster for the people that prefer Stefan’s charm and humor over Damon’s bad attitude and sarcasm.

  1. Rory and Dean – Gilmore Girls

In a very similar situation, Rory and Dean break up at the annual Stars Hollow Dance Marathon when Dean decides he can no longer ignore Rory’s obvious infatuation with the town bad boy, Jess. Rory cries at a bridge but is comforted by Jess when they finally admit their feelings for each other. Some people still haven’t gotten over the fact that Rory gave up Dean’s loyalty and floppy hair.

  1. Jess and Nick – New Girl

After two seasons of building a friendship and realizing they want more, we finally got to see Jess and Nick decide to be together. But just a season later, they break up when they realize all they have in common is their love for each other. Some fans were distraught that this meant one of them would have to move out of the apartment, but the two are still friends that get into crazy situations with their roommates.

  1. Carrie and Big – Sex and the City

These two probably break up more than anyone on television. Fear of commitment is the core issue of this relationship, and we see it time and time again. With each break up, the fans never knew if it would be the last. In the first movie, Big stands up Carrie at their wedding, but they reconcile. In the second movie, Carrie shares a kiss with her ex-boyfriend Aidan and confesses to Big out of guilt. Fans were sure this was the end of Carrie and Big. But he forgives her and demonstrates that their relationship can survive anything.

  1. The Doctor and Rose – Doctor Who

In Doctor Who, we see Rose share adventures and begin to trust the Ninth Doctor, but when he regenerates into the Tenth Doctor, fans began to support their relationship even more. However, in the season 2 finale, the Rose and The Doctor are separated by parallel universes, and viewers got to watch this heart wrenching separation. To make matters worse, we get to see the two say goodbye when The Doctor projects himself into Rose’s universe as a hologram. Rose has a breakdown and admits her love for The Doctor, and when he begins to reply, his projection is cut off, leaving viewers devastated and as heartbroken as Rose.

So there you have it; just a few examples of the heartbreak viewers endure while watching their favorite shows. So next time you’re rewatching them, be sure to remember these devastating splits and keep some tissues and chocolate nearby to comfort yourself and do your best to try to keep your faith in love alive.

Ranking the Christmas episodes of ‘Gilmore Girls’

GILMORE GIRLS (Image Credit: Warner Bros.)

GILMORE GIRLS (Image Credit: Warner Bros.)

As far as I’m concerned, a Gilmore Girls marathon is welcome at any time of the year. However, anyone who’s a tried and true fan of the show knows that one of Lorelai’s most favorite things is snow, so what better time to catch up on a few episodes than during the holiday season? Check out this ranked list of the Gilmore Girls Christmas episodes and be sure to get snowed in with Netflix this winter! Continue reading

TV Series Holiday Specials: The Best of Fake Beards and Itchy Sweaters!

THE OC (Image Credit: Warner Bros.)

THE OC (Image Credit: Warner Bros.)

I’m a sucker for Christmas and the Holiday spirit. Each year, this time of year, I’m the happiest girl alive. Christmas fairs, hot cocoa, sledding, Christmas presents, tree decorations, fireworks, snow ball fights, making snow puppets, resolutions, Christmas music, good food, happy people, and basically everything else associated with the holidays season can count on my enthusiasm. Therefore, I absolutely love Christmas and New Year’s TV specials. I think they bring out the best in TV series. Sure, they’re often over the top cliché and kitschy, but who doesn’t secretly love drama, merry Christmas songs, and kissing in the snow. Who doesn’t want to see some of our TV families living up to good old Christmas and New Year’s values such as forgiveness, resolutions, and peace? Who doesn’t love the coziness of the Christmas tree standing tall and proud next to the fireplace? Who doesn’t love wearing woolly Christmas sweaters and being thrilled because you can finally unwrap your Christmas gifts. I admit I do. And to convince you, I’ll share my list of marvelous Christmas and New Year’s specials with you. I’m not saying that these are my all-time favorite TV shows, but they do have great Christmas/Holidays episodes and these days, that counts for something! For those who’re not to be convinced: haters gonna hate… Continue reading

My Top 5 Favorite ‘Gilmore Girls’ Episodes

I have a really hard time picking favorites. Ask me my all-time favorite movie, my favorite food, or my favorite song…and I will not be able to answer. But ask me my all-time favorite TV show and I won’t hesitate to tell you it’s Gilmore Girls. Amy Sherman-Palladino’s hilarious and heartwarming tribute to mothers, daughters, and best friends is so fantastic, it’s incredibly hard to narrow down my 5 favorite episodes from the show’s 7 season canon. But I tried my best, and I hope the 15 other “favorite” episodes I wasn’t able to include on this list will forgive me someday. Continue reading

5 Fictional Towns I Wish I Could Visit

Some people love their hometowns. Others (myself included) have always dreamed of going somewhere else. But either way, we can all appreciate the fictional towns that somehow manage to be both cozy and happening, both small and large, both comfortable and exciting. Here are 5 fictional towns that I’d love to live in, or at least visit for a few days!

Stars Hollow, CT (Gilmore Girls)

I don’t think it’s possible to have a list of amazing fictional towns without putting Stars Hollow at the top.  It’s a perfectly imagined small town, filled with quirky residents who are always in each other’s business (but in a good way!). Stars Hollow supports a variety of unique small businesses, including Al’s Pancake World (which doesn’t sell pancakes), the Black, White and Read bookshop (which shows old black and white movies) and of course Luke’s Diner, the Gilmore Girls’ favorite place for coffee and burgers. The people are what really make Stars Hollow. From everyone’s favorite job-hopping weirdo Kirk to grumpy mechanic Gypsy, every character brings something interesting to the town and often the small scenes with the Stars Hollow townies are the funniest, most endearing parts of the show.

Rosewood, PA (Pretty Little Liars)

Okay, so Rosewood has some issues – a weirdly large amount of young adults are murdered there and the cops are totally worthless, but for Rosewood residents not somehow involved in the mysterious death of a teenage girl, it seems like a pretty darn nice place to live. Apparently it’s close to Philadelphia, so it’s easy to hit up some big city attractions while keeping things simple at home. Plus it seems to always be summer or fall in Rosewood, which is a definite bonus to living there. And everyone in that town is just so photogenic!

Stoneybrook, CT (The Baby-Sitters Club)

Avid BSC readers know that Stoneybrook has got it goin’ on. The town is big enough to have everything you need – Pizza Express and Donut Express for junk food, Bellair’s department store, and a Main Street movie theater…plus NYC is just an hour away, and Stamford is a few exits down the expressway. But Stoneybrook is also small enough to be pretty safe and cozy. I mean, it must be if parents are both letting their middle school girls baby-sit for strangers and, on the other side of the coin, letting random middle school girls baby-sit for their small children.

Pawnee, IN (Parks and Recreation)

Do you love miniature horses? Are you a fan of sweets, soda, and burgers? Do you like local music and harassing city officials? Then Pawnee is the place for you! Pawnee is home to some awesome corporations including Sweetums (so you’ll never have to look far for delicious candy) and Paunch Burger (which I assume is the Pawnee equivalent to Whataburger, since Whataburger definitely makes me feel paunchy).  On top of that, Pawnee has dedicated city council members like Leslie Knope who always try to do what’s best for the town, and they put together some pretty awesome events – including a memorial for a beloved local miniature horse, Lil’ Sebastian. I love any town that cares that much about a horse!

Colby, NC (Sarah Dessen novels)

All of Sarah Dessen’s novels take place within the same fictional universe, often featuring the beach town of Colby. Colby is a small town that is inundated with tourists over the summer, and it is a grand example of the type of town we all wish still existed but probably doesn’t. Colby doesn’t really have any chain stores, everything is a small local business – like the Last Chance Café, Clementine’s Boutique, and even the Gas/Gro convenience store. Despite being a small town where everyone pretty much knows each other, there’s still plenty to do and new people to meet over the summer. Colby is sort of like if Stars Hollow was on a beach, and everyone was about 70% less quirky – which is to say it is likely the slightly more relaxing alternative!

What have I learned from this list? I apparently need to visit the east coast sometime. I’ve only been east of the Mississippi river to visit Disney World, yet that’s where all of my favorite fictional towns are located. Still, it’s pretty unlikely that I’ll find anything quite like Stars Hollow or Pawnee!

An Open Letter to Jared Padalecki

Jared Padalecki (Image Credit: Gage Skidmore)

Jared Padalecki (Image Credit: Gage Skidmore)

Dear Mr. Padalecki,

You, sir, captured my heart way before you took on the role of Sam Winchester on Supernatural. From Dean Forester on Gilmore Girls to Clay Miller and his (gloriously tight) jeans in Friday the 13th, you managed to bring something to each character that makes you feel for them, even if they are jerks. I’m talking about your character of “Bully” in Cheaper by the Dozen, FYI.  And sure, the whole “you’re so attractive you make me dumb” thing played a part (because no one can deny your total obliteration of the Hot Scale), but you’ve got so much more than simple good looks.

You shine, Jared. Everything about you glows, and I’m not just talking about your tan. Whether you’re talking about your dogs, your wife and child or what you had for breakfast, there’s just something about you that can make any gloomy day seem not-so-grey. Your occasional Texas twang and friendly “y’alls” have the ability to make anyone’s heart melt and your sincerity is easy to trust. I still watch the video of you explaining how you broke the entire European train system because of a forgotten bag when I’m feeling particularly low.

And speaking of the train story, if that isn’t proof of how wonderful a husband you are, then there is no proof. Most men wouldn’t pause a DVR’d version of a Monday Night Football game for their wife, let alone bring an entire train system to a screeching halt because her bag that had a couple of nice dresses in it was left behind. Congratulations on earning an unlimited number of knight-points with every female for the rest of your life.

Now, while most girls were probably heartbroken over your move from bachelorhood into the married life, I was relieved. Genevieve has had a wonderful impact on what was potentially the only thing about you to make me cringe – that wardrobe. Seriously, Jared, flip flops to a premiere? Oddly printed Hawaiian shirts? It just wasn’t good. But now that Gen’s around, it’s all good. The suits are working for you, my friend.

Then again, if it were up to me you’d only wear the outfit from your greasy welder photo shoot. That white undershirt was seriously working for you. What? I never said I was above the objectifying.

Now, I can’t continue on with this letter with dedicating an entire paragraph to the luscious, wavy locks that make up your hair (or lion’s mane, depending on the day). I have watched it transform into a character all its own over the last eight years and I’m convinced that, should you ever cut it, no one would ever recognize you again. Seriously, what shampoo do you use? Because my hair never quite glistens in the sun like yours. I mean, all someone has to do is carry a fan around at all times and your hair would be flowing in the breeze like the next Fabio.

But I have to admire you for one thing above all others, Jared. Despite all of your wonderful qualities, you are flawed like any other human. And your flaws are often criticized and broken down far more harshly than any of your costars. But in the face of all that backlash and hate (many of which comes from your own “fans”), you continue to smile and openly state how much you appreciate and care for the Supernatural family. You keep laughing and encouraging others to love the show, love the people involved and love the fandom. Even the crazy ones.

Keep shining, Jared, because you’re changing a lot of people’s lives by just being you.

Sincerely,

Holly S.
