Taylor Swift might be the reigning Queen of the break-up song when it all goes sour but she ain’t the only one to pen a song about a nasty break-up. Celebs have been airing their dirty laundry for all to hear via their music for a long time! Sometimes it even ends in a war, just ask Eminem and Mariah… Continue reading

5 Times Max Martin Made Me Love a Song By an Artist I Don’t

Max Martin is not really a household name, but if you’re a fan of pop music, you’re probably familiar with him. The Swedish songwriter & producer has crafted a gigantic amount of hit songs for an eclectic variety of artists, from the Backstreet Boys early in his career to The Weeknd more recently.

What’s fascinating is that the guy can write such a great hook, it really doesn’t matter who’s singing it. As a result, I frequently find myself in a situation where I hear a new song by an artist I normally don’t like, but am surprised to find I really enjoy the song. Then, if I look the song up online, about 99% of the time I find out it was written and/or produced by Max Martin. I am not even exaggerating here.

Let’s take a look at 5 times Max Martin managed to win me over with songs by artists I never liked before:

Out of the Woods by Taylor Swift

This was the first Taylor Swift song I heard and thought, “Yeah, I’m really into this!” It’s the song that encouraged me to research 1989, which led me to the realization that Max Martin’s fingerprints were all over it, which led to me actually buying and loving 1989. So, not that Taylor cares, but she’d be down at least one fan had she not had the good sense to jump on the Max Martin train.

Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande

Mr. Martin has worked with Grande before (the catchiest songs on her last album were all touched by his magic), but Dangerous Woman immediately caught my attention and stuck with me. Since it’s a bit different than Martin’s usual fare, it was a pleasant surprise to learn he co-wrote and produced the tune.

Can’t Stop the Feeling! By Justin Timberlake

I could get into NSYNC and early JT, but his latest albums have been a bit of a snoozefest for me. Maybe Justin was getting a bit bored himself, because this infectious song, co-written by Martin, is an upbeat departure.

Dark Horse by Katy Perry

Martin has actually worked with Katy Perry quite a bit, which is why her songs are so catchy and popular despite her mediocre-at-best voice. But it’s Dark Horse that finally managed to get me to admit I liked a Katy Perry song, and I’m giving Max Martin complete credit for that.

One More Night by Maroon 5

As a general rule, my opinion of Maroon 5 is marred by Adam Levine’s smarmy face and the fact that their songs, which all sound alike to me, get played incessantly on the radio. But then there was One More Night. It’s so darn catchy. And why is that? Because Maroon 5 didn’t write it – Max Martin did!
In some cases Martin’s collaborations have led me to albums and artists I grow to love, and other times I’m just salty about feeling compelled to sing along with a Maroon 5 song, but I am always awed by Max Martin’s talent and the fact that this brilliant Swedish dude has such an impact on American pop music.

One of the neatest aspects of the music industry is to watch what happens when musicians inspire their peers. When you have such a unique and diverse array of people who each have their own style, the possibilities for the way one song can be performed are seemingly endless. Sometimes musicians covering other musicians results in disaster, and other times, like when Imagine Dragons recently covered Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” something truly magical happens. Here are 10 unexpectedly awesome covers! Continue reading

John Mayer recently released his first his first ever duet with girlfriend Katy Perry, “Who You Love.” That’s a pretty legit couple-y thing to do, when you think about it: regardless of whether or not the pair go the distance, the song is now part of music history, marking the moment in time when Katy Perry and John Mayer were in love. If they are ever to split up, they will forever be haunted by that darn song on the radio as evidence of they time that they possessed so many emotions that they burst into song about it, as if they were Snow White and Prince Charming or something. One Big Step Back for Feminism? Celebrity stances on the ‘F-Word’…

Why is society so scared of feminism? Female celebrities have been reluctant to identify as such, largely because of misconceptions of what feminism is, which contribute vastly to the negativity surrounding it. This aversion to the word has been undoing many dedicated efforts of feminists before us. Rosie the Riveter would hang her head in shame. However, I believe society would celebrate and relish feminism, if we just knew what it meant. Continue reading

The 31st Annual American Music Awards took place last night in downtown Los Angeles, and played host to some of the nation’s biggest musical acts. There were performances by Lady Gaga and R. Kelly, Imagine Dragons, Jennifer Lopez and even Pitbull, who acted as the night’s host. As far as award show’s go, this one was exactly what you could have wanted; plenty of wonderful performances, many extremely grateful artists accepting awards and Miley Cyrus leaving a lasting impression on viewers who tuned in to watch.

There was also the introduction to a new award titled the AMA Icon Award, which honors an artist that has achieved great success in the music business. For example, Rihanna sold 50 million albums and 180 million digital tracks in the past year, which helped her gain the honor of being the first Icon Award recipient.

In case you missed the AMA’s last night, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best (and worst) moments from the night, as well as a complete list of all the 2013 AMA winners. Did your favorite artist take home an AMA? And did your favorite part of the night make it on our list? Let us know in the comments below.

Every woman has a specific brand of fake eyelashes that she loves and trusts. Katy Perry’s line of lashes created by Eylure is mine. Perry’s fake eyelashes are amazing and come in a variety of different styles for different occasions, including a separate color pop selection featuring black lashes with hints of green, blue, and purple for when you really want your lashes to stand out.

Whether you like your lashes short or long, there is a style for everyone. The Eylure Site describes the styles as follows:

‘Sweetie Pie’ is a dainty, natural hair lash that will discreetly add length and volume to your own lashes.

The ‘Oh Honey’ style is a flatteringly full lash, textured for a natural finish but with enough volume to take your lashes from fine to fab!

‘Cool Kitty’ lashes has gorgeous framing with manicured tips, these lashes can be worn in the day to be daring or at night as the perfect finishing touch.

Double Lash ‘Oh My’ are big and beautiful with a layered effect.

If you’re already a fan of Katy Perry’s ordinary style lashes then you will love the new Color Pop Lashes, which are available currently available in three colors as black strip lashes with hints of color, Ka-Boom! Blue, Ka-Ching! Peacock and Ka-Pow! Purple, and as a mixed pack of individual colored lashes, Ka-Zaam! The color pop lashes are meant to enhance the color of your eyes and really add a wow factor, making your eyes stand out. You can use it as a secret weapon. Give them a try and make your eyes pop!

Not only are the Katy Perry fake lashes easy to apply, they’re also good quality making them a must have for fans of fake lashes. They’re also reusable so you get your money’s worth and are a fantastic buy at prices anywhere from £5.95 GBP to £6.45 GBP (about $9.45 USD to $10.24 USD).

2012 VMA Predictions Are In!

2012 VMA Predictions Are In!

It was August 2011 in the City of Angels, Lady Gaga opened the show in  full ‘Jo Calderone’ mode, Britney bagged herself two awards but the most talked about moment of the night (the crowd went WILD) has got to be Papa Jigga bursting with joy as Beyonce revealed her baby bump to the world.. cue ‘awwwwhs’ all over the globe!

Yes, it’s that time of year again – The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards are returning to LA, honoring some of the biggest and best music videos from the previous year. So, Beyonce won’t be dropping any bombshells this time round but it’s gonna be one hell of a show for sure.

The nominations are in with R&B’s finest Drake and RiRi leading the pack with 5 each for ‘Take Care’ with last years big winner, Pop siren Katy Perry coming close behind with 4 nominations, with Queen Bey also getting 4.

It’s been a good year for music with some amazing music videos but here’s a few (the most important ones) winners predictions  for you!

Video Of The Year

Drake feat. Rihanna – ‘Take Care’
Gotye feat. Kimbra  – ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’
M.I.A. – ‘Bad Girls’
Katy Perry  – ‘Wide Awake’
Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris – ‘We Found Love’

The big one! Last years winner Katy Perry has been nominated again, although with RiRi getting two nominations solo and her duet with Drizzy, I think she’s going to bag this one. The controversy she caused for dancing in that farmers field, causing chaos through the streets of Belfast, being from the Emerald Isle, I have to go for ‘We Found Love’.

Best Male Video

Justin Bieber – ‘Boyfriend’
Frank Ocean – ‘Swim Good’
Drake Feat. Rihanna – ‘Take Care’
Chris Brown – ‘Turn Up the Music’
Usher –  ‘Climax

This has got to go to the most talked about man in R&B at the minute, Frank Ocean for ‘Swim Good’, saying that Drake could go home with gold for ‘Take Care’ despite it being a duet. Chris Brown’s the underdog with ‘Turn Up The Music’, but everyone loves an underdog to come out on top don’t they..

Best Female Video

Rihanna – ‘We Found Love’
Katy Perry – ‘Part of Me’
Beyonce – ‘Love on Top’
Nicki Minaj – ‘Starships’
Selena Gomez & The Scene – ‘Love You Like a Love Song’

Tough call this one, could go to any of the nominees, 5 brilliant videos BUT Katy Perry has the edge, she’s the strongest contender, ‘Part Of Me’ shows us the intense dark side of usually colourful quirky pop star, and it’s an amazing song to get you over that one who broke your heart.

Best New Artist

Fun. feat. Janelle Monae – ‘We Are Young’
Carly Rae Jepsen – ‘Call Me Maybe’
Frank Ocean – ‘Swim Good’
One Direction –‘What Makes You Beautiful’
The Wanted – ‘Glad You Came’

It’s gonna be one hell of a showdown, a battle of the British boybands as The Wanted and One Direction go head to head to bring the moonman back to the UK. Although there’s a chance that neither will win, Carly Rae Jepson with her summer smash ‘Call Me Maybe’ or Fun & Janelle Monae with the anthem ‘We Are Young’ could easily take home the prize. My bet is tha One Direction will win, teen girls everywhere will no doubt make sure of that, surely!

Best Hip-Hop Video

Childish Gambino –  ‘Heartbeat’
Drake feat. Lil Wayne – ‘HYFR’
Kanye West feat. Pusha T, Big Sean & 2 Chainz – ‘Mercy’
Watch the Throne – ‘Paris’
Nicki Minaj feat. 2 Chainz – ‘Beez in the Trap’

Wow,  is this gonna be a battle royale or what! This category has the hottest MC’s the game has to offer at the minute, YMCMB have the biggest chance of winning with 2 of their crew up for the award.  Kanye and G.O.O.D. Music are rising to the top so ‘Mercy’ could easily take the moonman home, but if I’ve to put my money on anyone, it’s gotta be Watch The Throne with ‘Paris’. Kanye and Jigga, the kaleidoscope effect – that sh*t cray! It’s a tough call though, the category is full of heat.

Best Pop Video

One Direction – ‘What Makes You Beautiful’
Fun. feat. Janelle Monae – ‘We Are Young’
Rihanna – ‘We Found Love’
Justin Bieber –‘Boyfriend’
Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa – ‘Payphone’

It’s gonna be a battle between the One Directioners and the Beliebers for this one, 5 British teen heart-throbs they may be but I think ‘Boyfriend’ will take it home. showing a more grown-up Bieber (..and that falsetto, swoon!) that appeals to his more mature  fans, yet  he still maintains the charisma that made teen girls weak at the knees all around the world.

Best Video With A Message

Demi Lovato – ‘Skyscraper’
Rise Against – ‘Ballad of Hollis Brown’
Kelly Clarkson – ‘Dark Side’
Gym Class Heroes – ‘The Fighter’
K’Naan feat. Nelly Furtado – ‘Is Anybody Out There?’
Lil Wayne – ‘How to Love’

This one has got to go to Demi Lovato, although Kelly Clarkson is a strong contender. The way Demi was able to bounce back to the pop scene with a track like ‘Skyscraper’, after fighting and more importantly overcoming her demons makes her an obvious winner to me.

Best Direction

M.I.A. – ‘Bad Girls’
Duck Sauce – ‘Big Bad Wolf’
Coldplay feat. Rihanna – ‘Princess Of China’
Frank Ocean – ‘Swim Good’
Watch the Throne – ‘Otis’

A strong category, but it’s got to go to ‘Otis’, directed by the genius that is Spike Jonze, the attention to detail is out of this world and Jigga and Yeezy are two of the biggest rappers on the planet right now, if that’s not enough for them to take home the moonman then I don’t know what is!

There you have it, some of my predictions for the VMA’s, there’s a few I haven’t mentioned, ‘Best Choreography’ being one, my money’s on Chris Brown, Breezy got some damn good moves.

As well as the excitement of the awards, there will be performances from Alicia Keys, who will be debuting her new single, eek, exciting! Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, Pink, One Direction and American rockers Green Day! The performers aren’t the only stars taking to the stage though, Miley Cyrus, Andy Samberg, Wiz Khalifa and Ke$ha are just a few of the names mentioned to be presenting an award.

Did I mention Kevin Hart was hosting this star-studded event? Prepare yourselves’ for some quality standup and laughs throughout, he’s very easy on the eye too.. 😉

You don’t want to miss this one, tune in to the MTV VMA’s this Thursday, September 6th at 8pm in the US or if you’re in the UK, you can catch all the action on Friday, September 7th at 9pm.
