What to Do When You Have a Panic Attack

What to Do When You Have a Panic Attack

The first time I had a panic attack, I thought I was dying. I’d gone to see a movie with some friends one Thanksgiving night in high school, and I ran into an ex I’d had a messy breakup with and thought I’d never have to see again. Continue reading

Social Media, Anxiety and YOU

“Did someone like my status? Or see my newest picture on Instagram?” “I know I didn’t get a notification, but it won’t hurt to check just to be absolutely completely sure that nothing new happened on Facebook.” Yes, I’m one of those people. Someone who checks his social media accounts periodically, even when he knows decently well that nothing has happened. Rationally, I know it seems like borderline insane behavior – or at least the behavior of someone who is very anxious. But, at the same time, I know plenty of people just like me… Is social media making us crazy? Continue reading

Worse yet, the people who aren’t sure how to sympathize or empathize with anxiety and phobia sufferers can come off as if they don’t take the symptoms seriously. Continue reading

We’re so busy watching out for what’s ahead of us, we don’t take the time to enjoy where we are.”-Bill Watterson

So the new year has been ushered in. A fresh start, a new beginning. Every year, as January comes around again, we are given a sense of being able to wipe the slate of the previous year clean and approach the new one with a clear head. You may be one of the many, many people who, come each 1st of January, write up a list of goals that you hope to achieve in the year ahead. Or you might be someone who prefers to just plough ahead and throw yourself into any new challenge that comes your way. Whatever your attitude towards beginning a new year, it can be easy to quickly lose sight of your goals or your lifted spirits as the cold of the winter sets in and you find yourself back at the hard slog of work. Supposedly, we’re coming up on the most depressing day of the year – Blue Monday. The third Monday of January is claimed to be the day on which people are the most depressed in the year… For obvious reasons I’m not going to give that much attention, surely we all feel most depressed on different days of the year due to our own individual problems in life. However, saying that January is a depressing month makes sense. Firstly it comes the festive season, particularly the end of Christmas for everyone who celebrates it, and secondly, for the northern hemisphere, the month is not famed for its fantastic weather. Most of us have to go back to school/college/work and despite our best intentions with resolutions for the new year we find ourselves just wanting to go to bed and hibernate.

It doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom though, getting through the winter months is all about having the right mindset to get through them. Instead of letting the grey and the cold get you down and the return to the hard slog making you long for the holidays again already, focus on the good stuff. Continue reading

Life can be overwhelming. If that statement isn’t true for you, you’re either doing something amazingly right, or exactly the opposite. For the rest of us, there are ways to deal with things. You can seek out professional help with a psychologist, or even talk to a psychiatrist about medication if necessary. But what about the people who don’t quite need that level of help? Maybe you truly are just overwhelmed and need a quick help to get things sorted out and going in the right direction, but there isn’t some deep seeded emotional issue to work through. Or maybe there is and you’re just not ready to go there! Continue reading

Even the happiest of individuals needs a pick me up every now and again. Business Insider recently published an article that compiled various studies on ways to make life a little brighter.
