Flame On! The ‘Fantastic Four’ Rise from the Ashes

FANTASTIC FOUR (Image Credit: 20th Century Fox)

FANTASTIC FOUR (Image Credit: 20th Century Fox)

The early 2000s saw a huge boost in superhero movies, and among this early set was the nearly universally-panned film Fantastic Four (2005). Now, although I was only 14 when the movie came out, I’d like to think my movie taste wasn’t terrible, and I liked the movie so there must have been a special something about that particular story because I agree that the sequel was terrible. John Green & Shailene Woodley announce she’ll be cutting her hair for ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ and donating it to charity!

One of the best things about John Green being internet famous is that he’s constantly online and sharing awesome details about the production of the movie based on his novel, The Fault in Our Stars. On Tuesday he announced via YouTube and elaborated on Tumblr about the big aesthetic change that Shailene Woodley is making this weekend to play Hazel Grace Lancaster.

There’s no denying that Shailene has gorgeous hair. When it’s not pulled back, it reaches almost to her natural waist and has the kind of beauty that you know comes from being healthy, not from hours at the salon. Her character in The Fault in Our Stars (or TFiOS as it’s known online) is a 16-year-old cancer patient, so fans already expected to see a very different look in the movie. What wasn’t necessarily expected though, is that rather than wear a wig for the role, Shailene is going to cut her hair and donate it to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization who provides wigs for children dealing with medically-related hair loss.

As a founding member of Nerdfighteria, John is a big believer in promoting awesome and decreasing world-suck (all the things that suck in the world), so of course he’s excited over something like this! He shared it in his Vlogbrothers video on Tuesday as well as on his Tumblr, not exactly compelling the community to do the same, but wanting to share the idea with them and encourage them to do so if they had any inclination to do so. John did ask that if anyone does participate, to post about it and use the tags #hairforhazel and #itgrowsback to keep the posts trackable.

I hope that Children With Hair Loss is ready for the donations they’re about to get; Shailene has joined the conversation and explained her own relationship with her hair and is urging anyone who is in a place to do so to donate theirs as well. She is also gracious enough to be clear that if you love your long hair, you should definitely keep rocking it.

Just from the volume of posts on tumblr about people cutting their hair, I’m going to guess that they will be receiving many more donations in the next few weeks than they typically do. As someone who has donated her hair in the past, I think it’s a fantastic thing and would encourage anyone who is comfortable doing so to check out the donation page and head to a salon. When I cut mine, I went to a SuperCuts and they did it for free, you may want to call a local place and see if that is offered near you!

I’ve been scrolling through the tags on tumblr and I can’t help but notice that every single person I’ve seen with a before and after picture looks AMAZING in the after picture. It’s starting to make me want to go for a super short cut myself! I’ll probably just end up donating some money to help CWHL fund the wig making.

As soon as there are pictures of Shailene’s cut, we’ll be sharing them, in the meantime, please leave a comment sharing your donation stories or whether you’ll be participating in this unofficial hairforhazel drive!

The rumors of a Magic Mike sequel have been buzzing around Hollywood since the successful release of the original last summer.  Well, this blogger and The Daily Quirk readers want to know if they need to start collecting dollar bills now or if our dreams of another film of heavily endowed Richie, bootie shorts Dallas, and the magical Mike himself half (or nearly) naked is never going to happen.  I’ve done a little digging and this is what I’ve found. 5 Things I Learned from the ‘Closed Circuit’ Trailer

Eric Bana as Martin Vickers in CLOSED CIRCUIT (Image Credit: Focus Features)

Eric Bana as Martin Vickers in CLOSED CIRCUIT (Image Credit: Focus Features)

Earlier this month, the first trailer for Closed Circuit was released. While I hadn’t heard of the movie before, the cast list intrigued me. Eric Bana (Hulk, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Hanna) and Rebecca Hall (The Town, Iron Man 3) play defense attorneys in London who are called upon to defend an international terrorist when the case gets – let’s just say – “complicated.” Check out the list of things I learned from the trailer, and check out the movie when it hits theaters on August 28th. Movie Review: ‘Man of Steel’

Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Henry Cavill as Superman in MAN OF STEEL (Image Credit: Warner Bros.)

Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Henry Cavill as Superman in MAN OF STEEL (Image Credit: Warner Bros.)

Woweeezowie…it almost hurts (in a good way) to watch Henry Cavill play Superman because he is so ridiculously hot.  Chest, arms, deep endless blue eyes, abs, chest, perfect smile, arms…I don’t know where to focus.  For the record, there IS a shirtless scene in this film and it is worth seeing.  My friend, who has been married for years and is usually less vocal about male hotness than I, couldn’t stifle a “whoa, I mean, wow” when he stepped out of the water sans top.  If you hadn’t already fallen in love with him in The Tudors, which I had – Duke of Suffolk  (swoon!), you will undoubtedly fall under his spell after watching him play one of the most iconic super heroes of all time. So far we’ve gotten sneak peeks of Shailene Woodley as Tris Prior in two pivotal scenes from the movie adaptation of Veronica Roth’s young adult dystopian thriller, Divergent, but today we got our first look at Theo James in the much talked about role of Tobias “Four” Eaton. The hotly debated role went to James after months of speculation that four other actors were in the running to play Woodley’s love interest in the film and some interesting comments from Woodley on the type of man she would like for the part. Now that we’ve gotten our first glimpse of the big screen version of “Four,” we want to know what you think of James in the role! Make you opinions known in the comments below and check out all three released stills from Divergent here on The Daily Quirk.

Crazy in Love: The Typecasting of Women in Rom-Coms

Sandra Bullock in THE PROPOSAL (Image Credit: Touchstone Pictures)

Sandra Bullock in THE PROPOSAL (Image Credit: Touchstone Pictures)

The thing is about romantic comedy movies is you can generally tell exactly where it’s going to end up and we’re okay with that because we’re really interested in the action between boy-meets-girl and boy-and-girl-get-together.  However, you can also be pretty certain how the female lead is going to act: ridiculous, overbearing, and hilariously inappropriate.  The way I look at it, the rom-com lady is, in nearly every single case, a flawed, and unruly individual who typically falls into one of three different types (with some overlap in certain cases): the snowlady, the restraining order, and the desperate.  There are, of course, more types that rom-com women can fulfill, but in my experience these are the overarching roles that these ladies play in this genre and what the character’s behavior is constructed around.
