BEAUTY REVIEW: Kari Gran Skin Care System

Kari Gran Cleansing Oil (Image Credit: Kari Gran Skin Care)

Kari Gran Cleansing Oil (Image Credit: Kari Gran Skin Care)

As someone who has always had very sensitive skin, it can be a challenge for me to find beauty and cleansing products that don’t dry out my skin or make me break out. I was extremely happy with the results I got from Kari Gran’s Cleansing Oil, Hydrating Tonic, Essential Serum and Lip Whip Balm.

The Cleansing Oil, Hydrating Tonic and Essential Serum can be used as a skin care system, or the elements can be used separately for different purposes. While using the products as a system takes a bit longer than using most products you’ll find at a drugstore, it’s definitely worth it.

In the evenings, you massage the Cleansing Oil into your skin and then steam it off with a hot towel. The Kari Gran products are made with natural, organic, sustainably-harvested materials, including lovely smelling essential oils, so while you’re steaming away the Cleansing Oil, you’re basically also getting an aromatherapy treatment. It was seriously one of the most relaxing things I think I’ve ever done.

Step two of the system has you mist a few pumps of the Hydrating Tonic into your palm and add a pump of the Essential serum and you’ve got yourself a moisturizer! After massaging the moisturizer into your skin, you’re done and ready to get your beauty sleep.

My skin felt incredibly soft after the first time I used the cleansing system. I loved the way the natural essential oils brought a glow to my skin, and I was so thankful to find something that didn’t dry me out or make me break out. It also did a great job of removing the stubborn makeup my normal skin care routine usually left behind.

I also really enjoyed that you can use the products separately. When I’m getting ready in the morning, I love how fast it is to just spray my face with the Hydrating Tonic rather than applying a moisturizer and waiting for it to sink in before continuing on with my makeup routine. The Hydrating Tonic also does a great job of setting mineral makeup.

The Essential Serum also has an added bonus for those who wear mineral powder foundation – it can be mixed with the powder to create a custom tinted moisturizer.

In addition to the skin care system, I was lucky enough to be able to try Kari Gran’s Lip Whip Balm. The Lip Whip Balm is an essential oil-infused tinted lip gloss and balm combination that comes in an easy-to-carry pot. The one I tried was pink-tinted peppermint balm, and I loved it. I’m a habitual lip balm user, and I find that a lot of glosses either make my lips chapped or just feel sticky and uncomfortable. The Lip Whip Balm was very lightweight and had a very sheer pink tone that would look nice layered over other products as well as on its own. It didn’t have the sticky, heavy feeling that many glosses have, and it also had the added benefit of hydrating my lips rather than drying them out.

Overall, I loved the results the Kari Gran Skin Care system and Lip Whip Balm gave me. The skin care system was like nothing I’d experienced from a drug store product before, and it’s definitely worth the investment. And because all of the products are made from natural, organic, sustainably-harvested materials, you can rest easy knowing your skin care system didn’t harm the environment.

What We’re Loving Right Now: Mustela Daily Baby Care

Mustela Products (Image Credit: Mustela)

Mustela Products (Image Credit: Mustela)

Mustela has been the skincare expert for babies and mommies-to-be since 1950 and it’s their natural, high quality approach that keeps them on top. Mustela Bébé products contain 92% ingredients of natural origin on average and all Mustela products are hypoallergenic and free of parabens, phenoxyethanol, phtalates or alcohol (how awesome is that?). I had the pleasure of trying out three products from their Daily Baby Care line, Hydra Bébé Body Lotion,  PhysiObébé No-Rinse Cleansing Fluid and Facial Cleansing Cloths (courtesy of the lovely people at Mustela), for a review here on The Daily Quirk. Here’s my take on all three of these products which are not only awesome for baby, but for mommy too!

Hydra BébéBody Lotion

This daily moisturizing lotion is specially formulated for the delicate skin of babies and newborns and provides immediate and lasting hydration while reinforcing the skin barrier.”

My expectations were far exceeded with this lotion. On baby, it is gentle and keeps skin soft, as a baby should be. I decided to try it on myself to see what effect it would have on my winter weathered skin and was very surprised. The results were immediate. As soon as applying to my body, especially my hands, they no longer felt cracked or looked dry and it seemed to last all day long. The lotion is very light and non-greasy so my skin can breathe. Another thing that makes me happy about this lotion is that a little bit goes a long way, no need to use a huge amount and no need to reapply several times a day. The whole family uses it! This product comes in a 10.14 oz. bottle, the suggested retail price is $15.00 and 88% of the ingredients are of natural origin.

PhysiObébé No-Rinse Cleansing Fluid

Ideal for quick clean ups, this no-rinse cleansing fluid for face and diaper area effectively cleans and softens the skin. Just apply to the skin using a soft cloth, diaper wipe or cotton pad and pat dry — no rinsing needed.”

I didn’t use this one on myself but I did use it for just about everything else relating to baby. It cleaned and kept my baby’s skin soft so I knew I could use it often. It’s great for those first few days when  the baby is home from the hospital but can’t take a bath yet. After that, I used it for spit ups, formula spills and during diaper changes. Not once was my child’s skin irritated. This product comes in a 10.14 oz. bottle, the suggested retail price is $14.50 and 98% of the ingredients are of natural origin.

Facial Cleansing Cloths

Gentle one-step cleansing of baby’s face leaving it soft and moisturized.”

A must have for all diaper bags and/or purses. I know these are facial cleansing cloths, and I did use them for that, but I must confess that I also used them for my pup. In between baths, they were great to wipe her down a little and keep her fresh. My 8 year old used them in the mornings before school and I used them before bed. The texture of the wipe is super soft; I have found some other facial wipes to be a little rough. For me, these cleansing cloths were a nice shortcut for times when I was just too tired to wash my face before bed. My face felt so soft and refreshed after using. An added bonus is that they do a great job at removing makeup too. My 8 year old loved them because they cleared up a breakout she had on her head in literally one day. It’s great knowing that this product, too, has multiple uses. This product comes in a 0.43 oz pack, with 25 wipes per pack, the suggested retail price is $9.00 and 98% of the ingredients are of natural origin.

 The Bottom Line

All in all, these products are great for anyone to use and the scent is mild and reminiscent of being at a spa. All three products are dermatologically tested under pediatric supervision so I felt confident about using them on my baby on an everyday basis and they all appeared to be very gentle. The best thing, to me, is that not only can they be used for your baby, but for yourself as well..and even daddies too! I highly recommend all three for moms on the go and I look forward to trying out more Mustela products in the very near future.

Homemade Cleaning (Image Credit: Wavebreak Media)

Cleaning… Sadly, it never ends. Your house could be shining like diamonds in the morning, but if you intend to live in it, it’ll be dirty by the afternoon, and then the cycle starts all over. Laundry, dishes, dusting, floors… The trouble is, the home-cleaners we buy in stores, despite their efforts to make our living spaces cleanlier, leave us breathing in toxic chemicals and smearing them on every surface of our homes. If you mix the wrong two cleaners, the reaction can be lethal. Have you ever heard of death by bathroom cleaner?

Luckily, these chemicals and toxins can be easily avoided by making our own home-cleaning solutions. Chances are you have all the necessary ingredients in your cabinet already. All you need are a few basics: baking soda, white vinegar, lemon, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol and water, obviously. Between those six ingredients, all kinds of cleaning can be done, without the harmful side effects of chemicals and animal testing. Continue reading

DIY Homemade Sugar Body Scrub

With summer going by so fast, I tend to limit my pedicures to save some money. The one thing I hate about not getting pedicures when I should is the annoying dry white lines that we all get on our heals! If you don’t get them without the help of lotion or scrubbing, I would love to know how!

One thing I almost always do in the shower is use my pumice scrub on my feet. My bottle is almost at the end, so I decided to google ways to make your own body and foot scrub. While wanting to save money, I figured an at home remedy would be less than $10 and include sugar, which I always have. How hard could it be to make? Continue reading
